New Solar Farm Proposed for Toowoomba Region

Ecology and Heritage Partners are proud to be assisting Yarranlea Solar and the company’s proposed 100 megawatt (MW) solar farm project at Yarranlea, 50 kilometres west of Toowoomba on the Darling Downs.

The project was recently lodged with Toowoomba Regional Council for assessment and involves construction and operation of the solar farm and associated infrastructure such as control room, battery storage, capacitor banks, switch room and transformers and inverters.

The project will be constructed over four stages with Stage 1 involving 40MW of solar panels, followed by 20MW of panels in each subsequent stage over the 300 hectare site. The solar farm is proposed to be constructed on cropping land and has been designed to have a minimal impact on the highly fertile soils of the Condamine River alluvium.

Ecology and Heritage Partners completed an Ecological Assessment Report within the study area to support the development application. The project required preparing a Property Map of Assessable Vegetation (PMAV) of an existing patch of remnant vegetation supporting an endangered regional ecosystem to more accurately define the vegetation boundary and to increase the developable area for the project.

The Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) approved the PMAV and as the remnant patch was below the threshold for mapping under the Regional Ecosystem Framework, the vegetation was re-categorised as Category X vegetation, providing an exemption to the proponent to clear the vegetation under the Vegetation Management Act 1999. The vegetation also contains a small, isolated population of Belson’s Panic Homopholis belsonii, a grass species listed as threatened under Queensland and Commonwealth legislation.
