A number of our staff dressed in their finest 1950's Rock'n'Roll attire, and thoroughly enjoyed the VPELA Gala Dinner for 2015 at the Crown Palladium Ballroom, Friday 8 May.  Along with 750 other attendees from the planning, environmental law and development industries, it was a great opportunity for our staff to network with our clients and colleagues in the industry, share our recent project successes and establish new relationships.

We congratulate Oona Nicolson, Director, awarded a VPELA Fellow on the evening

This year's Gala Dinner was especially exciting for us, as one of our Directors Oona Nicolson, received a prestigious VPELA Fellow Award, for her valued contributions in cultural heritage and the wider industry over her many years as a VPELA member.

'It was a great honour for me to receive this award. I was pleased to be recognised for my ongoing contributions to the industry. I've worked as a Cultural Heritage Advisor for nearly 20 years and have been a regular contributor in the sector. It's great to see the industry grow, develop and recognise the ongoing importance of heritage values.' Oona Nicolson, Director

Extract from the citation on the evening:

Oona is an accomplished archaeologist with specialist expertise in Aboriginal and Cultural Heritage. She has been the forefront of development in this discipline even before the introduction of Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.

Oona and Ecology and Heritage Partners have been regular contributors to VPELA through seminars and events. Oona has informed, promoted debate and prepared submissions to government concerning the introduction of, and amendments to the Aboriginal and Cultural Heritage legislation and policy.

Fellow archaeologists and other professionals have benefited from her mentoring and training in the sector, as she continues to raise awareness to indigenous archaeology.

Oona has extensive experience in Melbourne's growth areas, and is a trusted expert witness in VCAT and Planning Panels, she is an active participant with the peak industry body, the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (of which she was a former National President), a member of the industry advisor's group at Flinders University and is a member of the Victorian Heritage Council.

VPELA acknowledged that they have benefited from Oona's intelligent, pragmatic and disciplined approach to her area of expertise.

'She is a Fellow candidate who is representative of the true multi-discipline nature of VPELA'.
