Biodiversity Offset Management Plan

Queensland Central Highlands Region

Our specialist team were engaged by a mining firm to undertake on-ground management of a biodiversity offset site in Queensland’s central highlands region.  An approval condition under the Commonwealth Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), the large offset site (over 1000 hectares) is to be managed (active and passive management zones) over several years to restore Brigalow threatened ecological community (Brigalow Acacia harpophylla dominant and co-dominant), and to ensure the protection and enhancement of other National and State significant ecological values.

The site values will be protected and managed through the implementation of several management actions such as the reduction of grazing, the control of environmental weeds, and the implementation of an appropriate fire regime. Extensive areas of the offset site are typographically unique and difficult to access, and as a result have not been systematically surveyed. Given this, it is highly likely that through the combination of baseline ecological surveys and BioCondition assessments by our ecologists, additional threatened species will be detected, which in turn will inform how we strategically manage the values throughout the offset site.

A rigorous monitoring program (statistically robust survey / monitoring design) is currently being developed to track the rehabilitation process, with the ultimate aim of increasing the ecological values of the offset area.  The project team, in close consultation with our client and local landowners, will also coordinate a pulse grazing trial within the Brigalow community to reduce the impact of highly invasive Buffel Grass Pennisetum ciliare on the rehabilitation of the offset area.
