Aquatic Assessments and Research
Our freshwater aquatic ecologists are experienced and proficient in:
- sampling and identification of aquatic mammals, fish, crustaceans,
and macroinvertebrates in a range of aquatic environments.
- the use of survey techniques, including bait traps, seine
and fyke nets, and backpack and boat electrofishing across a range of
aquatic habitats (estuarine, riverine and wetland) throughout
Australia.
Accreditation
Our staff are accredited in the
rapid bioassessment (RBA) protocol and
the calculation of macroinvertebrate indices (SIGNAL scores and AUSRIVAS).
Research
We have a strong background in research, and our staff have developed a range of monitoring techniques designed specifically for various aquatic environments throughout Australia.
Field equipment and technology
We use the latest field equipment and laboratory technology to collect high quality field data. This data enables us to identify macroinvertebrates (excellent taxonomic capabilities) often down to species level.
Aquatic assessment and research
We conduct aquatic assessment and research on several significant aquatic species, including: Australian Grayling
Prototroctes maraena, Dwarf Galaxias
Galaxiella pusilla, Murray Cod
Maccullochella peelii peelii, and Yarra Pygmy Perch
Nannoperca obscura.
Key Projects
Staff regularly undertake
sampling regimes (including instream assessments, and water quality and macroinvertebrate monitoring) to access the health and condition of waterways. Below are some of the projects where sampling has been undertaken:
- Isaac River Project, Queensland
- Raspberry Creek, Victoria
- Environment Protection Authority RBA Project
- M80 Ring Road Upgrade (Western Ring Road) (Thiess)
- Mortlake Power Station Project (Origin)
- Shaw River Gas Power Plant project (Santos)
- The Victorian Desalination Plant (Thiess Degrémont)
- Western Highway Duplication (VicRoads)
