Heritage Assessment and Planning

An important prerequisite prior to any development in Victoria is a determination of whether impacts to registered or potential heritage places will occur.

All heritage places are protected from harm under the Heritage Act 1995.

The heritage values of individual buildings, gardens, neighbourhoods and landscapes is a core ingredient for defining community identity.  Unravelling the complex layers of Victoria’s history and applying an understanding and application of established heritage assessment criteria provides a clear recognition of the heritage significance of a place.

Within the complex framework governing urban planning in Victoria, planning for development within a heritage context requires a clear understanding of the heritage values of a place or places and a pragmatic yet careful approach to applying heritage principles to a particular project.

Heritage Permit

Substantial penalties apply for undertaking works to heritage places without a Heritage Permit. Contact one of our specialists who can provide you with advice on your project's legislative requirements under the relevant legislation and state and local government policy.
